What is Premarital Counseling?
Premarital counseling is a program designed to enhance specific areas of your relationship with your future spouse. This is an opportunity to learn how you and your fiancé can make your marriage more fulfilling even before it starts. Some of the areas that are explored include intimacy, finances, role definition, and communication skills.
Research has shown that premarital counseling plays a vital role in building strong marriages. You will learn more about yourself, your fiancé, and your relationship. The program assesses and provides tailored feedback on the skills that will keep your marriage healthy, happy and committed.
What Does the Program Cover?
Premarital counseling consists of four 90-minute sessions:
- In the first session, the couple explores the history of the relationship and their families of origin.
- During the second session, each person meets with the counselor individually while the other person completes the FOCCUS questionnaire (FOCCUS stands for Facilitating Open Couple Communication, Understanding, and Study).
- The third session includes a discussion of the results of the questionnaire, allowing the couple to identify areas of strength and opportunities for growth in the relationship.
- The fourth session ties all of the previous information together so that the couple can form a plan to enhance their relationship skills.
- Couples are encouraged to schedule a complementary follow-up session six to twelve months after the wedding.
The series is by far the best investment you can make in your marriage. Remember...the wedding lasts a few hours. Your marriage is for life.
